How Your Habits Are Keeping You Fat (and what to do about it)

Posted on by

Let’s start by defining what a habit is.

According to Wikipedia, a habit is a routine or behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously.

This means the things you do on a daily basis, snacking, overeating, going to your favorite fast food restaurant, are often done without you even realizing it.

It also means that your current situation, how overweight you are, can all be attributed to the habits you have developed over time.

So now the question is, how do you change your habits?

The answer is really quite simple.

In the words of Leo Babauta, make it so easy you can’t say no.

One of the reasons people have such a hard time changing their habits is because they take the all or nothing approach.

Have you ever tried to completely transform your entire way of eating in one fell swoop? How did that work for you?

Chances are it didn’t work at all.

If you want to change the way you eat, you have to start small.

For example, rather than completely swearing off your favorite chocolate chip cookies, start by cutting back to three cookies per day.

This may seem like a small, insignificant change, but it will make a huge difference.

In the book Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about the power of getting just 1 percent better everyday, and how small changes compound over time.

You may not notice a difference immediately, but if you keep at it, you will eventually start to see your body changing for the better.

The key is to start with a habit so small and so easy, that it requires little to no motivation to get it done.

This same concept can also be applied to exercise. Rather than trying to workout 7 days per week, start by working out 3 days per week.

Doing it this way will greatly improve your chances of success.
