This Simple Strategy Will Help You Break Any Bad Habit

Ever have someone tell you to just stop eating unhealthy? Or to just stop overeating?

The trouble with that type of simplistic advice is that it doesn’t deal with the root of the problem.

James Clear, author of the best selling book Atomic Habits, says that all bad habits are developed as a way to deal with either stress or boredom.

And while those bad habits may be bad for your health and cause you to gain weight, they are also providing you with an emotional fix.

For instance, if you are having relationship issues you may opt to use food as a way to cope with the stress of the situation.

Because you find great comfort in the food, it’s virtually impossible to just stop that bad habit.

Here’s what you should do instead….

Replace the bad habit with a new habit.

Whenever you get emotional and feel like bingeing on a box of Krispy Kreme donuts, opt instead to walk in place for 10 minutes. Or opt to listen to one of your favorite fitness podcasts. 

What you’ll notice is, after a few minutes the urge for the bad habit will go away. 

The idea is to come up with a more productive way to deal with the emotions you are feeling. 

This will require some planning ahead. You need to know how you will respond when faced with stress, boredom, or various emotional highs and lows. 

Please know that improving your habits takes time. Don’t beat yourself up if you fall off the wagon.

Just keep working at it everyday and eventually that bad habit will be history.
